Do you remember the story? The Biblical Law experts brought Jesus a woman caught in the act of adultery. They reminded him (as if he, the creator of the Law, needed reminding) that in Moses’ law, such a sin was punishable by death. So, what should they do? They were testing Jesus to see if he would go against Moses’ law on the one hand or show no grace on the other. They were trying to trap him.
Jesus’ response was very simple: “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7) Here’s what struck me: Even though not one of them could have thrown a stone, Jesus could have. He was perfect, no question. Even his own enemies couldn’t find fault with him. And yet, what did he say to the woman? “Neither do I condemn you; go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:11)
How gracious our Savior! No matter how great, how public, how unforgettable the sin, Jesus doesn’t condemn you, though he could. Instead, like in this situation, he intercedes on our behalf before his Father. “Father, have mercy!” What amazing grace!
1 Timothy 2:4-7b
“[God] wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and human beings, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as a ransom for all people….” (1 Timothy 2:4-7b TNIV)
Let’s go now in his forgiveness and work to leave our sinful habits, words, and thoughts behind for the glory of our heavenly Friend!
