Big Idea of the Series: Oftentimes, people who have been in church awhile use language that is unfamiliar to new believers and unbelievers. Sometimes, even the Christians who use those words don’t understand their significance. In this five-week series, we will use the book of Romans to help us better understand some commonly used “church words” and their application for believers.

Week #1 – The Trinity

Big Idea of the Message: We worship one God who reveals himself in three persons.

Application Point: Worship the awe-inspiring God who is too complex and beautiful to be fully understood.

Scripture Lesson: Genesis 1:1-5

BZZ Words

The Trinity

Week #1

  1. The Trinity is hard to understand.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit… - Matthew 28:19

  1. There is the Holy Spirit.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. – Romans 8:9

  1. There is the Son.

But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. – Romans 8:10

  1. There is the Father.

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. – Romans 8:11

Points To Ponder

  1. What are some “church words” that you find confusing or that you have heard others say are confusing?

  1. Why do we “have our own language” in the church?

  1. How do you think it can be an impediment that we have our own language in the church? How can we remove barriers to understanding?

  1. Do you find the Trinity a difficult concept? How does God in three persons comfort you? How does the Trinity challenge you?
